There’s a certain vibe in the unfiltered, the unpolished, the slightly rough around the edges. It’s that raw energy, the genuine essence of a moment captured without a safety net, that often makes something truly special. No filters, no endless takes; just the immediate, vibrant energy of that moment. And sometimes, that’s exactly what happens when you’re live on stage.
Back to the Jack Plane Days
For those of us who cut our teeth in the music scene, especially during the 'Jack Plane days,' there was a ritual before every show: the quick 20-30 second line check. It wasn't about perfection; it was just enough time to test the gear, make sure everything was plugged in, powered up, and functional. A quick strum, a thump on the kick, a vocal check, and then – hit it. It was about readiness, not rehearsal.
When Things Go Sideways
This time, however, things took a different turn almost immediately. We were hyped, ready to deliver a killer seaside show, especially with a brand-new EP just around the corner. The energy was palpable, the crowd was buzzing, and the first notes were about to ring out. Then, within literally 15 seconds of starting, my A string decided it had had enough. It snapped with a definitive ping, leaving a sudden, unwelcome silence in its wake.
The Classic Predicament
Of course, in a classic 'this can only happen to me' situation, I hadn’t brought a backup bass. Who needs a backup when you’re just doing a quick line check before a show, right? The heart sinks a little, the mind races, and you briefly wonder if this is the premature end to a promising night.
A Hero Steps In
Just as the gears in my head started grinding on contingency plans, a friendly bass player emerged from the wings. Someone with a keen ear and an even keener sense of timing stepped in, offering their sweet Fender Jazz Bass. What a lifesaver! It was an act of pure generosity and the spirit of camaraderie that defines the best parts of the music community.
The Show Must Go On
Thanks to that timely assist and the incredible kindness of a fellow musician, we were able to keep going. We swapped basses, adjusted on the fly, and, remarkably, played the entire gig like nothing had even happened. The audience, perhaps none the wiser, continued to soak in the atmosphere, and we delivered the set we’d promised.
The Best Stories Are Unplanned
Sometimes, it’s not the perfectly executed plans that become the most cherished memories, but the unexpected twists and turns. A seaside show, the anticipation of a brand-new EP, a broken string, and a borrowed bass – it was exactly the kind of beautiful chaos that makes a night truly unforgettable. It’s a testament to resilience, the power of community, and the raw, unfiltered energy that proves that even when things are a little rough around the edges, that’s exactly what makes them special. These are the moments that weave into the fabric of our journey, making every note, every performance, uniquely ours.
